## Your options are very limited

Many communities turn down anyone on a registry, with no time limit. Others look at the offense and how long ago it was. We can't promise any property will review your application. The community makes that call.

## Public housing and Section 8

Federal rules are strict here. Public housing and the Section 8 program have to turn down a household if anyone in it has a lifetime registration requirement under a state program. That rule is in 24 CFR 960.204 and 982.553. If your registration isn't for life, ask the housing authority or [legal aid](/local-resources/) how the rules apply to you.

## Check every address before you apply

If you're on parole or probation, your conditions may limit where you can live, like a child safety zone. Some cities have their own ordinances too. Check each exact address with your officer before you apply, and ask about any city rule there. Every adult moving in is usually screened, so tell us who's moving in with you.

## Report the move on time

In most cases you have to report a move in person at least 7 days before you move. That goes to your current registration office and to your parole or probation officer, if you have one. After you move, you usually have 7 days to report in person to the police or sheriff where you now live. Bring proof of who you are and where you live (Code of Criminal Procedure Article 62.055). Ask your officer or a lawyer about the exact deadlines for your case.
