# Find local help in Texas

Reentry, housing, food, legal aid and job resources for Austin, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio.

You don't need to fill out a search form or share your history. Read your city’s guide or filter the provider list. Then contact the organization yourself.

## City guides

Reviewed: 2026-10-11

Built from public provider and government sources. Call the provider to check what's available.

### Austin: start with your current housing situation

A housing assessment, a pantry visit and a job search appointment solve different problems. You can get food and job help at the same time you work on housing. The county reentry guide is good for finding more leads, but check its older listings with the provider first.

#### Sleeping outside or in a shelter?

Ask an ECHO assessment provider about eligibility. If you were homeless before incarceration and have been inside for 90 days or less, ECHO describes a way to get assessed. Ask an assessor before release. Couch surfing usually needs a different route, such as local assistance found through TDHCA.

#### Missing ID shouldn’t stop you from finding food

CTFB’s mobile pantries don’t ask for ID or registration. Partner sites can differ, so check which kind of distribution you picked. For benefits paperwork, ask for an in person or virtual appointment. Don’t assume a pantry visit comes with application help.

#### Job search help and training money are separate

Capital Area offers career guidance, but funded training has extra rules. Before you pay for a course, ask a navigator about your county, your job goal and any barriers from your record. For its online WorkInTexas workshop, finish the required account registration first and confirm the current session date.

#### If housing trouble comes with court papers

Contact TRLA intake and give them the date on your notice. Keep the notice handy when you talk. If TRLA can’t take it, ask for another referral and use TexasLawHelp’s directory. Waiting on an application nobody has answered isn’t a plan for a deadline.

### Houston: choose a service location before you travel

Houston’s reentry program, housing network and food bank partners each have their own intake route. Start with the problem that can’t wait, then work on the others at the same time. CFTH’s administrative office doesn’t offer homeless services on site.

Sources: [The Way Home Help Card](https://www.cfthhouston.org/gethelp)

#### For housing access, work through a provider

The Way Home Help Card separates shelters from day centers and explains Coordinated Entry for Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties. Ask the provider you contact about two things separately: assessment, and a place to sleep tonight. If getting there is a problem, use the Project Access route map.

Sources: [The Way Home Help Card](https://www.cfthhouston.org/gethelp)

#### For reentry classes, check the exact requirement

Call the Community Re-Entry Network about your goals. Some listed classes have fees. Before you sign up to meet a supervision requirement, ask staff and your supervising contact if that exact course fits. The program’s general description doesn’t answer that for your case.

Sources: [Houston Community Re-Entry Network Program](https://www.houstonhealth.org/services/community-re-entry)

#### Use the food line and career office for different needs

Houston Food Bank’s assistance line can help you find a pantry. Confirm how pickup works with that pantry. Gulf Coast Workforce Solutions offers virtual and in person support. That may help when travel or work hours make another office visit hard.

#### Match legal help to a civil problem

Lone Star Legal Aid handles civil matters, not criminal defense. When you apply, describe the housing, benefits or other civil issue and any deadline. If your income seems above the usual limit, ask if a special project covers you. Don’t rule yourself out over one income cutoff.

### Dallas: county boundaries change where to ask

“DFW” isn’t one service area. Housing Forward’s network covers Dallas and Collin counties. Greater Dallas workforce programs focus on Dallas County, and food bank coverage is different again. Tell each provider your county or ZIP code early so you don’t get sent to the wrong system.

Sources: [Housing Forward Homeless Crisis Helpline](https://housingforwardntx.org/) · [Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas](https://www.wfsdallas.com/career-services/) · [North Texas Food Bank](https://ntfb.org/food-assistance/find-a-food-pantry/)

#### Use the homeless helpline for a housing crisis

If you don’t have housing right now, call Housing Forward’s crisis helpline. Tell them where you’re sleeping and who is in your household. If you still have housing but need rent or utility help, use the separate assistance route. A homelessness referral isn’t an application for rent help.

[Housing Forward Homeless Crisis Helpline: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#dallas-housing) | [TDHCA Help for Texans: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#tdhca)

Sources: [Housing Forward Homeless Crisis Helpline](https://housingforwardntx.org/) · [TDHCA Help for Texans](https://www.tdhca.texas.gov/help-for-texans)

#### Book reentry planning before visiting

Unlocking Doors works with people leaving incarceration and with people already back in the community. Set up an appointment at the Greenville Avenue office and ask what to bring. For referrals, ask which provider actually does the intake and if you need to contact it yourself.

[Unlocking Doors: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#unlocking-doors)

Sources: [Who Unlocking Doors serves](https://www.unlockingdoors.org/who-we-are) · [Unlocking Doors](https://www.unlockingdoors.org/)

#### Handle food and online job applications together

Use North Texas Food Bank’s pantry finder for food in the Dallas area, and confirm what each pantry requires. Greater Dallas workforce centers offer computers and phones at no cost. That gives you another way to work on applications if you don’t have a reliable device or internet connection.

[North Texas Food Bank: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#north-texas-food) | [Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#dallas-work)

Sources: [North Texas Food Bank](https://ntfb.org/food-assistance/find-a-food-pantry/) · [Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas](https://www.wfsdallas.com/career-services/)

#### Ask if a legal barrier can be dealt with

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas describes services for some barriers tied to a record, driving privileges and inaccurate credit information. Eligibility depends on the facts. Ask about your exact problem. Don’t assume every conviction can be removed or every housing denial can be reversed. Call the local office about urgent papers.

Sources: [Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas: employment and housing barriers](https://legalaidtx.org/legal-topics/removing-barriers-to-employment-and-housing/) · [Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas: How to Apply](https://legalaidtx.org/get-help/how-to-apply/)

### Fort Worth: plan around intake and outreach options

The reentry center, the homelessness response system and the workforce centers each do a different job. First Stop is useful for finding your way through reentry resources, but you have to go in person first. If you’re homeless and can’t get to a service location, an outreach team may offer another route into assessment.

Sources: [Reentry First Stop Center](https://www.tcreentry.org/) · [Partnership Home coordinated entry](https://partnershiphome.org/systemresponse/coordinated-entry/)

#### Go to the intake office, not a coalition meeting

First Stop lists intake at Circle Drive, Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Its Noble Avenue coalition meeting address is different. Call to set up your visit, but expect to go in person for resource referrals. Ask which documents you need before you spend money getting there.

[Reentry First Stop Center: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#tarrant-first-stop)

Sources: [Reentry First Stop Center](https://www.tcreentry.org/)

#### Separate daytime support from overnight shelter

Partnership Home’s resource card lists True Worth Place as a day shelter. For overnight options, use the shelter contacts and ask about space before you go. Its Coordinated Entry page explains how outreach can document homelessness when someone can’t go to a shelter or chooses not to.

#### Check a pantry’s cancellation notice

Tarrant Area Food Bank’s locator puts cancellations under pantry names. Check there and call the pantry. Don’t count on a regular schedule alone. Ask how pickup works, especially if you’ll come on foot or need help carrying groceries.

[Tarrant Area Food Bank: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#tarrant-food)

Sources: [Tarrant Area Food Bank](https://tafb.org/find-food-main-x/)

#### Choose the right employment session

Tarrant workforce MAPS Re-Entry sessions require virtual registration. Other MAPS sessions have different instructions. Confirm the session type and the technology you need. If an old record or credit information is getting in the way of work or housing, ask Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas if a legal review fits your situation.

[Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#tarrant-work) | [Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#northwest-legal)

### San Antonio: know the program before you get in line

Haven for Hope has separate campus rules, Bexar County has a reentry support center, and food distributions may require advance registration. Checking the right intake path first can save you a wasted trip. These programs make their own eligibility decisions, including any requirements tied to your background.

Sources: [Haven for Hope](https://www.havenforhope.org/get-help/) · [Bexar County Reentry Center](https://www.bexar.org/3509/Reentry-Center) · [San Antonio Food Bank](https://safoodbank.org/help/)

#### For shelter, ask which campus fits

Haven’s published criteria and document list differ between campuses. Tell intake about your household and any missing paperwork. After hours, its Get Help page gives different instructions for guardians with children and for single adults. Read that section before you go. Contact intake about disability accommodations.

Sources: [Haven for Hope](https://www.havenforhope.org/get-help/)

#### For reentry goals, contact the county center

The Bexar Reentry Center at 222 S. Comal is a starting point for jobs and education. Ask what services you can get and what documents to bring. Workforce Solutions Alamo’s separate office finder can help you find computer access and job search help closer to your route.

[Bexar County Reentry Center: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#bexar-reentry) | [Workforce Solutions Alamo career centers: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#san-antonio-work)

Sources: [Bexar County Reentry Center](https://www.bexar.org/3509/Reentry-Center) · [Workforce Solutions Alamo career centers](https://www.workforcesolutionsalamo.org/workforce-career-locations/)

#### Get a confirmation for food distributions

For events that need registration, keep the confirmation code. If none comes, contact client services or try another event before you make the trip. If you don’t have a vehicle, ask for a walk-up option. Food help can still be available when a SNAP application is pending.

[San Antonio Food Bank: contact and access details](https://felonfriendlyapartments.com/local-resources/#san-antonio-food)

Sources: [San Antonio Food Bank](https://safoodbank.org/help/)

#### If you need rent help, not shelter

Haven’s FAQ sends rent assistance questions to other community resources. Try TDHCA’s local provider search and confirm current funding. If there’s a notice or lawsuit, ask TRLA about legal help too. Asking about funding and asking for legal help are separate requests.

## Houston Food Bank

Search by location for food pantries and other food assistance through the food bank's partner network.

Next step: Contact the pantry before you go to check hours, services and what it asks for. The food bank can help you find one.

**Choose a pickup site:** The map lists pantries, meal programs and distribution partners by ZIP code. Go to that site’s address, not the food bank’s main office.

## TDHCA Help for Texans

Statewide provider directory | Texas: search local providers by city or county

Help: Housing & utilities

Find local organizations for rental assistance, homelessness services, reduced rent housing and utility help.

Next step: Choose a help type and your city or county, then contact the listed provider. TDHCA doesn’t take applications from individuals. Local funding and intake vary.

**Choose the right route:** Utility help, emergency/homeless services and long-term rent help are separate choices. Enter your city or county after you pick the service.

Sources: [TDHCA Help for Texans](https://www.tdhca.texas.gov/help-for-texans)

**Application and funding:** Apply with the local organization the search shows you. A listed provider may be out of funding or full.

Sources: [TDHCA Help for Texans](https://www.tdhca.texas.gov/help-for-texans)

**If no provider can help:** TDHCA suggests checking city or county resources. A reduced rent property listing doesn’t mean an apartment is available or that a criminal record will be approved.

## TDCJ Rehabilitation and Reentry

Statewide reentry resources | Texas

Help: Reentry support, Housing & utilities, Jobs & training

State reentry resource guide, reentry hotline, program information and second-chance employment resources.

Next step: Open the current guide or call the reentry hotline. Ask each listed provider about eligibility and current intake. Being in a directory doesn’t mean a spot is open.

**Start with the hotline:** Use (877) 887-6151 for the Rehabilitation and Reentry Division; ask which resources apply to your release or supervision situation.

Sources: [TDCJ Rehabilitation and Reentry](https://www.tdcj.texas.gov/divisions/rrd/index.html)

**Employment route:** The division links a second-chance hiring resource. Employers still decide who qualifies and who gets hired. A listing isn’t a job offer.

Sources: [TDCJ Rehabilitation and Reentry](https://www.tdcj.texas.gov/divisions/rrd/index.html)

**Scope:** Programs include services connected to incarceration and release. Check eligibility, fees and intake with the program itself. Don’t assume every service in the directory is offered statewide.

## TexasLawHelp legal help directory

Statewide legal directory | Texas: coverage varies by organization

Help: Legal help

Browse legal aid organizations and other places to get legal help in Texas.

Next step: Choose an organization serving your county and issue, then check its intake process. Each organization decides who qualifies and if it can take your case.

Sources: [TexasLawHelp legal help directory](https://texaslawhelp.org/directory)

Sources: [TexasLawHelp legal help directory](https://texaslawhelp.org/directory)

**If a provider can’t take the case:** Use the directory to look for another organization that fits, or for its self help resources. Don’t assume an unanswered request changes a deadline.

## About this directory

These links go to independent organizations. A source check date shows when we read the provider's published information. It doesn't mean funding, a placement or an appointment is available. Check eligibility, hours and intake steps with the provider. The list has general community programs next to reentry programs, and each one has its own rules.

## Make the first conversation easier

- Ask: Do you serve my ZIP code or county, and are you taking new requests?

- Ask: What are the eligibility rules, costs and documents I need?

- Ask: Do I need an appointment, and is help available by phone or online?

- If the program can't help, ask which local group to try next.

To get ready for an apartment search, use our [checklist, budget planner and screening questions](/renter-resources/). For a property search, [request help from our locating team](/find-apartments/).

Found an outdated listing? [Email a resource correction](mailto:hello@felonfriendlyapartments.com?subject=Local%20resource%20correction) with the organization name and its official link. Please leave out personal case details.
